OK, so I mean, things are getting weird in Rochester. . .
The closing of the Yangtze resturant in Henrietta by the Health Department reminds us all that, well, the Health Department allowed it to remain open for quite some time. How did that happen? Sarah and I made the unfortunate descision to dine at the Yangtze last fall because we couldn’t think of anywhere else to go, and once there, could think of all kinds of other places we’d rather be. Like up to our necks in pig shit. We were seated in the food area, which was hot and humid and just seemed to crawl with life we’d as soon avoid, much as I imagine places in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom might have. The place was just nasty, which is unfortunate, because the downtown Yantze when it used to be over on Plymouth. Probably one of those “the son took over,” dillios, but I don’t really know.
And check out what they got busted for:
It does beg the question: how could they tell what was waste materials and what was raw materials. Still the Health Inspector closed the place down and it will need to be professionally cleaned before it can reopen.
Meanwhile, folks in the Rochester City Hall decided not to piss in the wind anymore, and just accept that people are going to swim at Durand one way or the other. Well, I suppose that perhaps like my opinion of legalized prostitution, this seems to be the only rational choice: give drug tests to hookers and put a lifeguard or two at Durand. You aren’t going to stop people from swimming there, the cops have stopped trying, and you might as well try to make it as safe as possible. I wonder what kind of caveats they’re going to issue in the opening of the park, or what they’re going to do to improve the conditions there apart from lifegaurds. This may well be the first decision Mayor Duffy has made of which I approve.

You only approve of one of Duffy’s decisions? Seems to me he’s been doing pretty well so far. Perhaps you could enlighten us with a few of his bad decisions.
Well, how ’bout a two-for-one? Let’s get rid of the Fast Ferry, but then keep the port in Toronto! How does that make any sense at all? If the ferry can’t make money, who is going to take over the port? If it can, why did we give it up? And in giving it up, we still saddle ourselves with debt we can ill-afford, but it’s OK to keep the $600 daily debt of owning the port in Toronto?
He’s also given public creedence to the notion of a canal in the middle of freakin’ Rochester. Does that not smack of lunacy? Are we planning on leading the nation in West Nile outbreaks? And as I’ve commented earlier in another post, there’s really no chance that the state is going for this one, anyway.
Both of these things make me wonder who gave how much to the Duffy campaign. Really, realy wonder. So far, I’m not coming up with much, but I’m working on it.
You’re being pretty hard on old Bob, aren’t you?
On the ferry — he’s trying to salvage what little good might be left from the ferry debacle, which he inherited. Spending a relatively small amount of money (by standards of the whole ferry endeavor) to keep alive the possibility that a private operator will come in and start a ferry service is a pretty minor sin. Your complaint is like the person who just had their gangreneous leg amputated complaining about the color of suture used by the surgeon. The important point in the ferry decision is that Duffy acted decisively to end the financial hemorrhage and move forward.
As for the canal plan, which I also think is idiotic, Bob didn’t originate it or give it a hearty endorsement. IIRC, he just said that it was worth looking at in more detail. When he starts advocating for the canal, then I’ll take your point about the canal.
The main accomplishment of the Duffy administration so far has been to hire good people and jettison much of the baggage of the Johnson administration. Why don’t you give him a year or two before you write him off?
LOL, perhaps you’re right, and I am being to harsh on “‘ol Bob.” Oh, I haven’t written him off. At the same time, I had great anticipation when Johnson took office, so perhaps I’m feeling a bit of the “show me” attitude.
Truthfully, I really don’t know a thing about whether his cabinet is a good one or a bad one, perhaps you can enlighten me with one of your own posts. I do know that in looking into his new police chief I was less than enthused with his record in smaller cities than Rochester: crime actually went up in the Maryland city where he was Police Chief, if memory serves.
Perhaps I’m just cynical, but what’s happened so far hasn’t seemed all that positive to me. I think he’s got a great rap, and any time I’ve seen or heard him, I’ve gotten a good feeling. I would just like to see that good feeling validated. Perhaps his statements on the canal project were just being diplomatic, but really, this is one that needs to get crushed and crushed hard.
Like I say: Durand is actually a step in the right direction.
