CD Baby: JOHN SACHELI AND THE SPIRIT OF ONTARIO: Simple Things

Alt-Country, Folk, Rock, Acoustic – a sound like James Taylor and Neil Young driving down the lost highway with Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan in the back seat, while listening to a mix tape – oh, and the car probably has a Beatles bumper sticker.

The production of the album really jumps out at you early; it sounds like John?s playing guitar right next to you. The credit for this intimate and lush production goes to the bass player for the band, Matt Klock. Actually, this is one of my favourite tunes that I?ve heard so far, anyway, so it?s just nice to hear it in such a good-quality recording. After the first verse, the bass and drums kick in for the second, introducing the rest of the band, The Spirit of Ontario. Despite their obvious youth, the whole band has a very seasoned and soulful sound.

Bush to visit town where tornado killed teens – CNN.com

ENTERPRISE, Alabama (AP) — “I don’t know of anything they didn’t do,” Riley said after stepping out of the collapsed hallway where the students died. “If I had been there, I hope I would have done as well as they did.”

The last of the bodies was removed Friday. The dead students included five boys and three girls, all 16 or 17 years old.

“Each one who was brought out, somebody would say, ‘That was a good kid,’ ” said Phares.

Democrat & Chronicle: Local News

“It really comes down to one thing: My frustration with how this process has dragged on for months and there has not been a face-to-face negotiation,” said Duffy, who has told city Corporation Counsel Thomas Richards to make travel arrangements. “I’m putting an end to this endless stream of e-mails and phone calls.”

Duffy announced in May 2006 that Euroferries would buy the ship for $29.8 million. The vessel is docked in Shelburne after Duffy ordered it moved through the St. Lawrence Seaway in December so it wouldn’t be stuck in Rochester for the winter.

All this to still end up losing money on this damned boat.  This is a classic case of “the cure is as painful as the disease.”  Poor Mayor Duffy tries to do something right and it’s costing us a fortune to do that, too.

LIBRARY: Maggie’s shocked! Shocked! – News & Opinion – Rochester City Newspaper

Brooks would have scored a lot more points with me if she had picked up the phone and called the director of the library after the Channel 10 piece. I’d have thought more of her as a public servant if she had expressed her concern and asked if she couldn’t sit down with the director and discuss the situation.

Maybe she did exactly that. Brooks doesn’t return a lot of phone calls from this newspaper. But we do know that she sent out a press release threatening to cut off millions of dollars of county funds from the library if it didn’t shape up. With that, the media were off and running.

The Supreme Court has already weighed in on this issue many years ago, the one point Mary Anna Towley did not mention in the piece.  This whole thing is pure political grandstanding and nothing more.

MEDIA: Why newspapers are losing readers – News & Opinion – Rochester City Newspaper

I used to be more exasperated with the D&C editors than I am now. They are mere pawns in the newspaper game. Heck, they want to keep their jobs like anyone else. And you don’t do that by alienating the boss. From what I read, it’s the D&C’s owners, obsessed with stockholders and profit, who are guilty of this watering down.

The major point, here: don’t bother blaming Internet media.

BUSH: Marching to Iran, II – News & Opinion – Rochester City Newspaper

In his New York Times column on Monday, Paul AdvertisementKrugman had this bleak assessment: the president isn’t planning to ask anybody’s permission to attack Iran. That’s why he’s insisting that Iran is meddling in Iraq — “Because there’s no way Congress will approve another war resolution,” Krugman wrote. “But if you can claim that Iran is doing evil in Iraq, you can assert that you don’t need authorization to attack — that Congress has already empowered the administration to do whatever is necessary to stabilize Iraq. And by the time the lawyers are finished arguing — well, the war would be in full swing.”

This one’s just depressing, folks.
