Of course, this blog has been fairly silent on the issue of Louise Slaughter’s endorsement of David Nachbar for the NY29 Congressional race over Eric Massa.  In case you missed it, here’s a bit from RochesterTurning.com to get you up to speed.  I’ve not commented largely because doing so would be a bit superfluous given the level of activity at RT and Fighting29th.  I don’t support Nachbar for NY29, I would consider supporting him for County Executive (why, oh why can we not just get a candidate, already?).  What more I might offer on the subject would be hard to say.

But I got an email from the Massa campaign today stating that they’ve received the unanimous endorsement of the Allegheny County Democrats and are beginning an “tidal wave” of support:

“Eric Massa was our candidate in 2006 and our feelings haven’t changed one bit,” said Lisa Duckett, Chair of the Allegany County Democratic Committee. “I believe Eric is one of the best candidates in the entire country and he’s most certainly running against one of the worst. Eric speaks to the families of Allegany County, and the 29th District is very fortunate to have a candidate of his caliber running for Congress.”

This is once again the smart move for the campaign: forget the controversy and get the endorsements.  Particularly from down south-a-ways.  No drama, just work.  As many have already commented, the tough part for a Pittsford executive in NY29 is to come off as anything remotely resembling authentic to the dust-and-jeans, hard-working agro-culture of the south end of the district.

Massa’s best asset, at least in winning his election, is his blue-collar accent and straight-talking directness.  That appeals to the no-bullshit crowd, and I almost regret that Massa can’t run against Tom Reynolds and put those assets to use against someone on the opposite team with the same qualities.  It would be fun to watch Reynolds’ no-bullshit style crumple against Massa’s no-bullshit style and substance.

If Massa can round up enough support in the south, it would make a Nachbar run there seem basically pointless, which in fact it is.  Slaughter is unlikely to have all that much pull down there (although you never know), and now that one camp has raised Massa’s flag, others may be encouraged to follow.
