OK, so I’ve been living in a cave and didn’t notice that someone had finally decided to challenge Maggie Brooks for Monroe County Clerk Executive.  And who is this guy?  None other than Andrew Stainton, and he’s going to be interviewed by WXXI’s Bob Smith today at 1pm, so don’t miss it.

You haven’t heard of Andrew Stainton?  Well, not to worry, neither had Google before he announced.  But according to a brief profile on R-News, he’s a former math and science teacher from the Rochester City School district and his centerpiece platform is transportation.

He currently works at MCC, who linked to an essay he wrote for the D&C, but the *&*#$&(%$%@# D&C doesn’t archive their shit right, so you don’t get to read it.  Do you feel informed, yet?  Apparently, it was entitled Rethinking the Loop, so again, he’s big on transportation.

I am interested in hearing him speak.  If nothing else, this could be a good opportunity to discuss new ideas and better policies than our current puppet-regime Executive has to offer.  The trouble is: new ideas like the Fast Ferry aren’t exactly thrilling folks in the suburbs.  Most of them just want to keep their money and continue to believe that the city’s problems are it’s own.

But we shall see how this progresses.  I hope he considers an aggressive, forward thinking campaign that doesn’t just look to buy up expensive television ads to get the word out.  He needs to get down to the roots and at least show that a guy with balls and conviction can take a bite out of Maggie Brook’s unassailable image.
