South Wedge: By Black and By White

Yesterday was an entertaining afternoon spent photographing the South Wedge with a new red filter for the camera, which tends to add a bit of drama to black and white pictures. In fact, I never took so much as a single color image the entire time I was out there.

South_Wedge-011 But of course, the architecture is really brilliant down on South Avenue, even if it’s been largely ignored and under-appreciated until just recently. The facades make for great photography subjects, especially in black-and-white photos. So, I took a leisurely stroll down a few blocks, snapping pictures as I went, ran into a few people and chatted about how things are going down there.

For those of you whom I spoke with, sorry that this took so long to post! I’d just decided that the images could use a bit of post-production touching up before I sent them out for the world. I hope I caught your good sides!

More pictures after the fold —->
South_Wedge-044 I ran into Kevin from Flesh for Fantasy Tattoo and we snapped a few photos of the tat shop for posterity. It’s a little place, which is a hard thing to keep clean, but they do it. Mind you, I have yet to have gotten any ink at all, but Kevin assures me that we will eventually get this remedied. My problem is that I can never really make up my mind one way or the other. . . .

Everybody in the place (I failed to get any names, which is why I’m a blogger, not a reporter) is very friendly and I’d be glad to get inked some time, once I can make up my mind about what that ink will be. The place has a kick-ass rock-n-roll feel to it, of course, as no tattoo parlor can be without. The walls are adorned by your usual chrome art and a few skulls to even it all out.

South_Wedge-057 Down the road a little farther, I stopped into Little Venice Pizzeria for a slice. The new digs on the corner of Caroline next to Equal Grounds are a whole lot nicer and fancier than the previous space by Beale Street. They’ve got a new logo, new color scheme in the place and some fantastic pizza. The wife and I are mourning the loss of our favourite place, the Pizza Cafe, but I’m thinking we’re going to be supporting the local businesses and ordering from Little Venice because I really liked the slice I had. Straight-ahead, good old American pizza with a nice spicy sauce and fresh pepperoni. Delicious.

South_Wedge-065 And like most places on South Avenue, they’re picking up a fair amount of business. I chatted briefly with a couple of ladies (again, not a proper reporter, so I have no idea what their names are. But my wife tells me she prefers it this way. . . . ) who were saying how much they enjoy coming down into the area as they finished up their slices and headed back out onto the street.

So if you haven’t checked out South Avenue lately, you really need to. There’s so much going on right now, there must be something you’ll like, I’m sure. Solera Wine Bar, the Green Grocer, the old standby Obatala and Shango, Lux and lots of other places to capture your interest. Do not miss the chocolates sold at Equal Grounds, they’re amazing.

Check out the whole series at the DragonFlyEye.Net Photo Page. I also spent some time on the much less friendly East Avenue, adding a few new HDR photographs to my collection which you can check out as well.
