Maggie Brooks’ Remedial Budgetary School

Hand it to Maggie Brooks: her’s is the very height of patronizing speech.

First, she threatens citizens of Monroe County to vote Republican because she needs a “team” to work with in the Legislature.  We have seen what that “team” can do.  Now, she offers the budget advisory team used by Monroe County to local schools, implying that they need some sort of education in balancing a budget:

Brooks offers budget advisory team to schools || Democrat & Chronicle: Local News

(October 6, 2007) — Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks has offered local school districts use of the county’s cost-cutting budget advisory team as a way to help them cope with reduced funding stemming from the F.A.I.R. plan to balance the county’s budget. “I don’t want to sit here and criticize schools for spending, I want to be part of the solution,” said Brooks.

Well, if you have to take fiduciary advice from someone, what could be better than to take the advice of a woman who heads a county with a $50 million budget deficit and who attempts to balance that budget by stealing money from schools in a thief-in-the-night session with her “team?”  Because she’s proven herself to be qualified to be “part of the solution.”

Maggie Brooks did not balance any budgets, she merely covered over an existing problem by reneging on payments to some of our debtors.  The fundamental issues still remain, as do the needs of school children in the county, she’s just choosing to ignore these things for the luxury of pretending to have accomplished something.  What’s more, the budget will continue to expand now that she’s introduced this false breathing room, and next year or the year after, we’ll be in the same boat without the low-hanging fruit with which to subsidize our waste.
