Richer, better-educated and connected: the Digital Divide continues to languish » DragonFlyEye.Net

New study shows a consistent gap between those with better educations, more wealth and everybody else in digital connectedness.

Every so often, a study like this comes up and we would love for it to show something different from it does. But consistently, education and wealth provide better access to the technology we once thought of as the Great Leveler.

Rochester, New York: The Capital of Cyborg Nation » DragonFlyEye.Net

Is this the pin-up of the future in Rochester?

Rochester leads the way in many different areas of human body augmentation, from internal networked biosystems monitors to genetic engineering. This has Jillian wondering: is Rochester soon to be the center of the cyborg nation that overthrows us? If it is, I certainly hope they find a way to maintain the Genesee Brewery despite its obvious lack of purpose…

Your Top 5 Posts for 03/10: of hookahs and duck-faces

Up until quite literally the last minute of this week, I would have told you that the Look A-Hookah store drilling incident was going to be the hands-down wackiest shit you’d hear all week. Boy, was I ever wrong. Christine Wright Darrisaw was arrested on Friday for threatening to kill the President of These United States back on February 24. But… well, it’s the picture that really sells this one…

Ok, I’m not going to lie: I read the affidavit and boy, oh boy, did the local media miss out on all the fun. I’m going to need to write another post immediately after this one. Enjoy and get ready!

Dude (allegedly) climbed up to the roof of Look-ah-Hookah and proceeded to drill not one, not two, but 65 holes in the roof. I get that the leaking water did a lot of damage. But seriously: wouldn’t busting a window have been quicker and easier?

Your Social Media influence extends well beyond your network

The Nielson company – that agency famous for their ratings boxes back in the Eighties – has compiled a fantastic study of social media users and web use in general. The study is full of useful insights, some more obvious than others, on the way in which we use Social Media.

But the really interesting point is that, contrary to popular belief, Social Media users tend to be much more involved outside of their SM networks than most. Of course this makes some sense, because if you’re not doing anything interesting, you’re not likely to have much to say.

Social Networkers, the report suggests, are more influential because the personal recommendation of someone you know is more powerful than other forms of recommendation. And SM users are more likely to voice an opinion on television, music, cloths, and of course political issues of the day.

So the million-dollar question is: does the use of Social Media make you more influential, or does your presence on Social Networks make them more influential? I don’t think this is necessarily a question that can be answered in the aggregate. But for those of us trying to make the most of SN, its worth taking the time to contemplate how much is coming from Column A and how much is coming from Column B.

Your Top 5 Posts for September 4th

A hurricane, a supernova, an Earth-like exoplanet (maybe) and pilfering newlyweds. No shortage of fun stuff this week, was there?

Every other thing is eclipsed by Hurricane Irene, of course. There has been lots of discussion over the last few years about the amount of media coverage given to storms and whether its appropriate. But Irene showed that the volume of coverage is probably less important than the focus, which is largely on the whiz-bang of the storm itself and less on the aftermath, which we’re still feeling.

But it wasn’t all glum news this week. A new potentially Earth-like planet was discovered 36 light years away; a supernova shines its light on us and I get to talk to a cool dude from the Strasenburgh Planetarium; and my favourite story of the week: the Pilfering Newlyweds, who tried to steal materials for their wedding reception. [Design Geek Wonky] Twitter is Making Newspaper Cool Again

I can hear you groaning. And I’m not suggesting that we should all invest in print media. But there is, for those who care about design and user interface, a significant change in the way media websites are required to look based on the adjusting realities of a socially-networked society that are probably worth stopping to examine.

I am examining these things, of course, because I just got done with my survey of my readers. And also because, based in part on those survey answers, I’m starting to think a change in the DFE theme is in order. Probably nothing in the next month – I tend to develop slowly – but change is definitely in the wind.

The current site’s layout is itself a reflection of the new realities of social media. I recognized in part that I needed to simplify what I was doing on the blog because I simply was not doing that much in the first place. I’ve been curating content on Twitter for a year or so now, more than blogging. The current site reflects that by devoting the bottom part of the screen almost exclusively on third-party content in the form of Bit.ly links and Twitter updates. The full-width content areas were meant to provide a full view of an article on a small browser window like iPad and mobile phones.

Trouble is: full-width layouts are hard to read and nobody’s really clicking on the links at the bottom. So its time for a change.

Meanwhile, the newspaper thing: it used to be that a “headline” was literally a large-print section at the top of an article. That’s why we call them headlines, of course. But the last iteration of news media changed the meaning of “headline” to mean “navigational element.” No longer did the headline live directly above the majority of articles: they existed on front pages as teasers to the article housed on another page.

Thing is, though: so much content is shared on social network sites that really, I’m betting the traffic to even quite popular news sites has to be greatly diminished in favour of direct links to content.

In short: the front page as link bait is over. I think its time to start putting headlines right back where they belong.

So I’m exploring ways to make a more “traditional” website here at DFE. No changes any time soon and I welcome any input anybody has. Hit me up on Twitter or reply at the bottom, let me know what you think!

A Note About Twitter Follows

I’ve been asked today why I didn’t follow a person back. Everybody on Twitter has their own way of doing things, and while I wouldn’t consider the way I do it “policy” for the site, I definitely have some habits. I’m just posting this to give you an idea what those are.

On Twitter, my biggest concern is engagement: I want to build an audience of people who comment back, RT, ask questions, whatever. Its the thing about Twitter that I’ve never gotten out of blogging and its important to me. My second concern in terms of following is spam accounts, and it is because of both of these two things that I follow or don’t follow people. So in an attempt to avoid the bots and get the most-likely active users, I generally only follow people who:

  1. Identify where they’re from. In particular, I follow people from Rochester and Monroe County as a first choice because Rochester is my chosen audience. That’s not to say I won’t follow someone from somewhere else. But really: why would someone from Dubai care what I’m posting about #roc ?
  2. Have an avatar. I don’t care if its your company logo or a picture of you. Just something that says this isn’t just an afterthought account. Duck face avatars, however, may be denied on grounds of taste….
  3. Have a bio. Strange but true, lots of people don’t bother with bios. And others use them to load ’em up with spammy hash tags. Again: if you’re selling bath salts and want to put that in the bio, awesome! Welcome aboard. But blank bios or spammy bios will not get you followed.
  4. Have posted something in the last three months. Lots of people are lurkers, and lurkers are cool. But if you don’t post, there’s not much point in my following you.

Between not wanting to encourage spammers, not wanting to hit my limit of follows and wanting to engage active users, I realize that I’m probably not following back everyone who deserves it. But we all have our motivations for being on Twitter, and the responsiveness I’ve gotten out of my audience is absolutely second to none. Any website would drool over the clicks-over-impressions ratio that I get on a daily basis from you all. So, I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing. And if you want a follow-back, fix up that account info and get in the game!

The DFE Reader Survey: Results and What Comes Next

First of all, I want to say a huge thank-you to every one of you who took part in my survey. I’ve done a number of surveys in the past for a variety of reasons and never had the kind of response I got from this one. You guys are awesome!

Since I’m always changing up what I do here at DFE, its important to me that what I’m doing stays interesting to those of you who have supported me. So the survey, while limited and hardly scientific, was meant to judge whether or not that’s been happening. And since I had a pretty good idea of where things might progress next, I wanted to see if that worked for you guys, too.

DFE has always been a political blog, and I’m happy to report that the overwhelming majority of you would prefer it to stay that way. Over ninety percent of you said you either wanted the same or more political coverage. That, I can do! But in large part because of what I’ve learned from the amount of clicks I get on articles I’ve posted, the site and the Twitter feed have also begun a transition towards more of a science and technology center. You guys also seem pretty enthusiastic about that change, which is awesome for me, so thanks! The site is slowly becoming more “me” than ever before and its really nice to have readers who appreciate that.

In fact, the only real loser in the topics department was economics. Well, they don’t call economics The Dismal Science for no reason at all, do they? Mondays have been my days for covering economic news and generally been my least-responsive days. In truth, I got into the economics side of politics because I was covering the Subprime stuff. But while the effects of that whole system are certainly still being felt, the story has largely run itself out and I have to admit that I’m feeling a bit rudderless on that count, myself. So, I would count on seeing a whole lot less in the way of economic news on the site and the feed. I’ll have to come up with another subject for Mondays.

Perhaps it aught to be local news, since there was a huge roar of support for the local stuff. I’ll admit that, especially with the focus of my writing shifting towards science and technology, this is a challenge for me. But I’ve been assembling more resources to try to cover local science and tech news, as well as the big stories of the day. Stick with me and let me know how its going!

And ok: I admit that the descriptions provided for the site and feed were not exactly even-handed. There were lots more positives than negatives, sue me for my vanity! But out of a list of positives, I’m especially proud that you guys find me funny as well as informative! Honestly, if there’s one thing that could *not* have been said about this blog a few years ago, it was that I’m “funny.” But again: opening up on Twitter and having your support has given me the opportunity to be more myself than ever on the Internet.

So, what comes next? Well, DFE’s going to keep on kickin’ and giving you the stuff you want. The focus is going to be much more on science and technology, particularly where science and technology news happens in Rochester. The Top 5 Articles lists that I’ve been doing on the weekends have been a great success, so that’s definitely going to be in the mix. And I’ll try to keep you all entertained with plenty of goofy shit, especially of the sophomorically-sexual variety I know you are especially fond of.

Thanks again for your support and your responses! Talk to you soon!
