Friday or Saturday

Governor Patterson was interviewed – lamentably – by Andrea Mitchell at the inauguration just now. He’s trying to be as circumspect as possible, but Mitchell just sort of assumes that Caroline Kennedy is the choice. I don’t think it is, based on his bob and weave.

But he did say Thursday or Friday will be the day for the announcement.

Blurring the Lines

Howard Kurtz has some interesting thoughts on the explosion of enthusiasm in the media for Barack Obama, and the celebrity-journalist nexus that’s happening spontaneously.

MSNBC’s Coverage of the Inauguration

For those of you suckers who, like this sucker, are forced to work on this day, you can watch the inauguration from lots of places. But there’s just no question about it: MSNBC’s website is the site best equipped to deliver really quality video of any media site out there. And they’ve got quite an interesting layout for their inauguration site. Check it out.

Meanwhile, I’ll try to keep the news updated and check in here once in a while during the celebration.

Poppa’s Got a Brand New Theme

DFE is celebrating the inauguration of our 44th president, Barack Obama, with a theme based on the iconic artwork of Shepard Fairey. Actually, it’s based on some neato Flash development at Obamicon.me that made the cool city skyline for the header. A shame I couldn’t get it to do a larger image, but I made due with what I had.

And now I’m going to lay my head down on my pillow knowing this is the last time I’ll ever do so with George Bush in the White House. And I’m going to sleep like a fucking baby.

The Invocation That You Did Not See on HBO

This is beautiful and wise. It’s a shame that the coverage didn’t start a little earlier. We should all be so reminded going forward.

D.C. Bars Open 24-7 on Inauguration Week: Queue the Frat Boys

The Washington Times is reporting – in minuscule detail – that legislation has passed through the Washtington D.C. Council to allow bars and restaurants to operate 24 hours a day for the entirety of Inauguration Week, citing the “need” to keep the party safely indoors. They point to the revelers in the streets of Washington on Election Day as the kind of thing they’d like to avoid.

OK, it’s their city after all – even if it’s our capital – so they can run their affairs as they see fit. But a couple of points worth making:

  • The city is estimating as many as three million people will be in town on that week. There is no way to avoid the party spilling into the streets. In fact, adding 24-hour alcohol is likely to fuel the fire, not quench it.
  • Election Day did not end badly, why are they afraid of Inauguration Day?
  • They’re not afraid of Election Day all over again. They’re looking to cash in on the festivities in their districts. Fine if that’s what you’re after, but why pretend differently?
  • What is it about frat boys vomiting into trash barrels – and come on, you know that’s what’s going to happen – says “The Change We Need?”

All things considered, I’m quite happy not to be going to the inauguration. Me thinks this is going to be a fucking disaster.
